Hoisting a column and shaft into place on the east front colonnade of the house connecting corridor, November 28, 1860. Standing just to the right of the column are Thomas U. Walter, with his hand on hip, and Senator Jefferson Davis of Mississippi. As Secretary of War during the administration of Franklin Pierce, Davis administered the building operations at the Capitol. As a senator, Davis was instrumental in securing the first appropriation for the Capitol extension.
