In the Korean War, Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY) served with the  Army's 503rd Field Artillery Battalion, 2nd Infantry Division, from  1948-1952. In the Battle of Kunu-Ri in what is now North Korea, he led  40 members of his decimated unit to safety from behind enemy lines  earning a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for valor. Elected to the  House in 1970, he has been a staunch advocate for our troops and  veterans. Congressman Rangel returned to Korea in 2000 as a leader of  the US delegation to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the outbreak .of the war..
