03/08/07--House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., during a photo opp before their meeting after House and Senate Democratic leaders announced plans that would remove U.S. troops from Iraq by next year. The House plan sets an ultimate deadline of August 2008 for removing troops from combat in Iraq and would require the president to certify by July that Iraqis are meeting key political benchmarks. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats introduced a joint resolution outlining a limited new mission for U.S. troops in Iraq and setting a goal of removing them by March 31, 2008. The resolution also establishes a target date for a pullout of combat troops Ñ favored by liberal senators Ñ but only as a goal, easing the fears of some moderate senators who have opposed a hard withdrawal date.
