09/29/05.SCHUMER ON ROBERTS CONFIRMATION--Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., arrives for a news conference after John G. Roberts Jr. was confirmed 78-22 by the Senate to be the 17th chief justice of the United States. Schumer voted against confirmation. The press conference was almost cancelled, Schumer being the only senator to show up; fellow dissenters Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-Mass., and Sen. Richard J.
