A section of wood with the date "1864", etched in it is displayed on a window sill in the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, that is scheduled to open July 1, 2006, after a six year renovation project. It was left untouched because it was believed to have been put there by a soldier during the Civil War. The building once housed wounded from the war.
