This photo was taken in a Joint Meeting of Congress in the House Chamber on 7 June 1989.  Here Prime Minister of Pakistan Benazir Bhutto addressed Congress after being elected the first female Prime Minister from a Muslim state in December of 1988.  At the age of 35 in 1989, she recognized the strong relationship between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.  One of the more interesting and most notable points she addressed in her speech is the mutual desire for, "a stable, independent and neutral Afghanistan, an Afghanistan where the people can choose their own system, their own government in free and fair elections."  This desire would be sought and eventually met in the years to come.
