saltonstall092002 -- Former Sen. Leverett Saltonstall (R-Mass.) packs a large ball of string accumulated by his energetic file clerk Judy Herman Sherbert from the daily mail deliveries to be sent to Massachusetts as he retires from office in December 1966, after 22 years in the Senate.  Saltonstall was governor of Massachusetts from 1939 to 1945; he was elected to the Senate in November 1944 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Henry Cabot Lodge Jr.  He served as Republican whip from 1949 to 1957, chairman of the Armed Services Committee during the 83rd Congress and chairman of the Republican Conference for the 85th through 89th.Congresses.
