WASHINGTON, DC - May 07: Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., during a mock swearing in for the cameras with his wife, Jennifer, daughter Madison, and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., after he was sworn in on the House floor. During his official swearing in, he held his 13-month-old daughter Madison in his arms, and took the oath of office Wednesday as the House's newest and 434th member. Scalise handily won a special election March 1 in Louisiana's 1st District, providing Republicans with a rare bright spot in a year of electoral setbacks. He takes the seat vacated by former Rep. Bobby Jindal, a fellow Republican who was elected Louisiana governor late last year. The 42-year-old computer science graduate from Louisiana State University and veteran of a dozen years in his state's legislature used his first remarks in the well of the House to thank Congress for the billions of dollars in hurricane recovery funds it has sent to Louisiana.
