7/18/03.WAYS AND MEANS DISPUTE--Jerry Weller, R-Ill., Mark Foley, R-Fla., and Nancy Johnson, R-Conn., during a news conference after the Republicans' successful motion to table a resolution offered by Democrats labelling Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas', R-Calif., conduct as incorrect during an incident earlier in the day during that committee's markup. From CQToday: "Capitol Hill police were called Friday morning to a Ways and Means Committee markup after Democrats stormed out and locked themselves in a nearby library room to protest the GOP's handling of a pension bill...The police arrived, but took no action. The Democrats left the room a short time later. .."If it came to a situation where there were assaults, we would intervene," said Contricia Ford, a spokeswoman for the Capitol Police. "But if they just refused to leave the room, there's really nothing we could do unless the sergeant at arms directed us to remove them."..Chairman Bill Thomas, R-Calif., directed his staff to call Capitol Hill authorities and have the Democrats removed from a Ways and Means library located behind the hearing room in 1100 Longworth. ..Democrats said they were furious that Thomas had unveiled his draft of the Portman-Cardin bill (HRÊ1776) around midnight, leaving them little time to analyze its contents. The bill would revise pension accounting rules and expand individual retirement savings options...In a procedural protest, Democrats demanded that the entire bill be read aloud, and then left the room, saying they were going to study the measure. ..After all Democrats except Pete Stark of California had departed, Thomas abruptly ordered an end to the reading of the measure, and banged the gavel before Stark could object. Stark tried to insist that he had objected, but Thomas said it was too late. Stark left the room, and the Republicans then approved the bill on a voice vote. ..Before leading the walkout, Charles B.
