WASHINGTON, DC - Dec. 12: House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., speaking, with Blue Dog Coalition Democrats during a news conference on the alternative minimum tax. As the House set up a showdown with the Senate over tax policy, Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer vowed Wednesday to do "everything in my power" to prevent a one-year "patch" to the alternative minimum tax from becoming law without offsets. Hoyer, D-Md., stood with members of the moderate Blue Dog Coalition, the party's staunchest advocates of budget discipline, as he made his vow. But later, he conspicuously declined to say whether he would prevent an AMT bill without revenue-raising offsets from coming to the House floor, where it could likely pass with Republican support. The Blue Dog Coalition is a group of fiscally conservative Democrats. (Photo by Scott J. Ferrell/Congressional Quarterly).
